The Domain Game

by Marc Majers

According to Wikipedia, the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) or web address is a standardized address name layout for resources on the Internet. Domain extensions are the ending to any popular domain name. The most popular of these domain extensions are .com, .net, .gov, .edu and .org, but have you heard of .xxx, .travel, .museum, .post, .mobi and .jobs?

Dot com has been the standard domain extension since the dawn of the Internet, however the general public is just starting to gain acceptance of .gov for government websites, .edu for academic institutions, and .org for non profit organizations. Believe it or not, there are a bunch of domain extensions that you may not be familiar with and the rate new ones are being is staggering. Recently there has been an incredible amount of focus on the .xxx domain extension reserved for the adult entertainment industry, but other extensions like .mobi for mobile phones, .travel for the travel industry and .post for the postal agencies deem just as much attention. All these new domains extensions are going to change the way we search for information and ultimately our lives. Below is a list of domain extensions available at a computer near you.
