Google image search

11 Nov

For over a year now the ability to search with just a single image has been possible on Google. I think that the general public has not been aware of this marvel in search technology. So instead of typing something or searching by voice, if you have a single image you can upload that image and Google will perform a search off that image.

Google Image Search:

  • Launch Google image search
  • Paste image URL or insert your own image
  • Google will scan image and find relevant search results
  • Google will suggest similar images

Family photo via Skype?

1 Sep

How do you stay together? Are you a Skype user? I read in Parade Magazine that Skype, the free video message service, started a campaign called Skype Stay Together that asks you how you use their product to do just that. One interesting story focused on how the popular video service was used to create family portraits with members that were scattered across another continent.

Denis is from Uganda and connects with his family via Skype everyday. One day Denis attempted to arrange a physical family portrait but logistically could not schedule it. How do you snap that family portrait with everyone miles away? Why not use Skype?

How to take a family portrait with Skype:
1. Connect parties with Skype
2. Set up camera with timer on tripod
3. Setup projector against white surface / wall
4. Get family to leave a spot open for you in photo and stand in that spot
5. Snap photo

Denis teamed up with artist John Klang to capture pictures of him standing with his family via Skype. You can read more stories about what people do to stay connected. I just thought this was the most innovative one.

Is it real or is it Skype? Read more stories here.

Connectivity is a Human Right

21 Aug

Did you know almost two-thirds of the planet is offline? Recently Leading Hands talked about Google Internet Balloons, now Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is shaking the same stick. He says, “Connectivity is a human right.” His plan is join forces with other companies and pull it off through the organization Internet.org.

Internet.org is a group created to develop the creation of Internet balloons, inexpensive lightRadio technology to small villages without cell towers and smartphones that cost less than $15. According to this CNN article, “Most of us take the Internet for granted. But think about what Internet access would mean to 5 billion people who don’t currently have it.” Follow the link below to the organization that has been created to make this Internet for all a reality.

How Secure Is Your Smartphone?

29 Jun

In a recent study by NQ, your smartphone could be at risk from a malware infection. According to the study, 58% of young smartphone users from the ages of 13 to 17 have been attacked from 2011 to 2012. The study highlights the top four ways your phone can be attacked: VDloader, DDSpy, Fireleaker or DyPusher.

  • VDloader is a malware that is run as a client on an Android device and then requested interaction with a remote server. Generally you get infected via a text message, so be on the look for suspicious texts.
  • FireLeaker is malware was disguised as a widget and hidden from view but
  • could collect device specific information. You can get this via clicking on a link by browsing or in a text message.
  • DDSpy is disguised itself as Gmail and ran silently in the background. It showed no icon and hid itself in the app list, communicating with its command and control server via SMS. This was discovered as a client-side Trojan malware.
  • DyPusher is capable of uploading device specific information as well as dynamically downloading files and apps without the user’s consent, thereby causing loss of privacy and potential bill shock.

Install security apps on your phone to detect malware – Android and iPhone.

Setup a Silent Ringtone

5 May

Do you set your mobile phone on vibrate and miss important calls? If you want to Ignore unwanted calls but answer important calls, you should try a silent ringtone.

How does it work? You record a silent ringtone for all calls and then setup specific ringtones for callers you would answer. For example your wife would have a specific ringtone but a telemarketer would get the general assigned silent ringtone.
