4 Tips on Phone Security

2 Jan

Now that you got that new mobile phone for the holidays, how do you keep it safe? The rules for keeping both iOS and Android secure are exactly the same:

  • Install updates as soon as they’re available. This is harder on Android as some OEMs are really bad about pushing patches.
  • Don’t jailbreak/root. Doing this is intentionally breaking the security of the affected OS – it also generally means you can’t install updates.
  • Don’t install apps from 3rd party appstores. Almost all of the smartphone hacks you see start with “an app on Chinese-run appstore…” just don’t do it. Google, Apple, Amazon only.
  • Practice safe browsing. The same things that make your computer vulnerable, make your phone vulnerable.

If you follow these tips and you should be golden. Don’t bother with anything claiming to be antivirus or security software for your phone. Security software needs to run at a permissions level that just isn’t possible on a non-rooted/jailbroken device in order to be effective. It’ll just end up causing you problems and providing no protection.

Apple Can Disable Cellphones At Concerts

9 Jul

Did you know that Apple first applied for a patent back in 2011 to disable cellphones and just received the grant? The new technology will use an infrared signal that can detect and disable both still images and video recordings. What do you think of this technology? How would you feel if your cellphone was disabled to take picture or video at a concert? Gene Simmons from KISS says as long concert goers are notified ahead of time it’s OK.

How Secure Is Your Smartphone?

29 Jun

In a recent study by NQ, your smartphone could be at risk from a malware infection. According to the study, 58% of young smartphone users from the ages of 13 to 17 have been attacked from 2011 to 2012. The study highlights the top four ways your phone can be attacked: VDloader, DDSpy, Fireleaker or DyPusher.

  • VDloader is a malware that is run as a client on an Android device and then requested interaction with a remote server. Generally you get infected via a text message, so be on the look for suspicious texts.
  • FireLeaker is malware was disguised as a widget and hidden from view but
  • could collect device specific information. You can get this via clicking on a link by browsing or in a text message.
  • DDSpy is disguised itself as Gmail and ran silently in the background. It showed no icon and hid itself in the app list, communicating with its command and control server via SMS. This was discovered as a client-side Trojan malware.
  • DyPusher is capable of uploading device specific information as well as dynamically downloading files and apps without the user’s consent, thereby causing loss of privacy and potential bill shock.

Install security apps on your phone to detect malware – Android and iPhone.

Will Palm Pre Save The Day?

5 Jul

The other day I saw the Palm Pre for the first time and I have to say that I was impressed. I am also partial to Palm because for 10 years I used and embraced their products. However since the advent of Smart Phones, Palm has lagged behind. Apple’s iPhone has dramatically shifted the way we think of mobile phones and Palm needed to catchup.

Palm Pre’s strong points:

  • Supports multiple processes in background (Run many programs at once)
  • Collect Info multiple sources (eg. Combines all email boxes into one box as does iPhone)
  • Cordless charging
  • Multiple search both web and device (As does the iPhone)
  • LED flash for its camera
  • Removable battery

Weak points:

  • Low battery life
  • Few applications
  • Less storage (8GB) than iPhone (16GB)
  • Physical keyboard (perhaps you like it?)

Palm seems to have caught up in phone technology with the Palm Pre, but is it too late? http://www.palm.com

KGB, Get Questions Answered by Text

11 Jun

Have you noticed over the last few weeks more Internet companies are advertising on TV more than ever before? KGB is not exception. I guess the Cold War is really over because the KBG has landed in America. KGB’s commercials feature a Smart Car that crashes through walls and KGB agents get out to answer questions. Their ad is reminiscent of the old Kool-Aid Man commercials, however now the gigantic red pitcher is an agent behind the wheel with bad driving record.

So what is the KGB besides the Russian equivalency to the CIA?  The KGB in America is the Knowledge Bureau and for $.99 cents you can get questions answered via your cellphone.  All you do is text your question to the number 542542 and The Knowledge Bureau will answer it.

Do you think this service will take off? Would you use the service?

Turn Website into Mobile Friendly

5 Apr

If you are a smart phone user (a phone that can surf the web), you’ll encounter that most websites aren’t mobile friendly. For example, on the iPhone if you surf a website that is entirely built in flash, nothing will appear because Apple has outlawed the Adobe Flash plug-in from working on their platform. Website owners is your duty to serve up a mobile version of your site these days because of the proliferation of mobile browsing. There are many free mobile detection scripts available, you just need to find one that works. If you need help, ask Leading Hands about mobile and we can point you in the right direction.

If you are a web surfer and you are tired of not getting mobile friendly content then use then point your smart phone to ITHY. Their website says, “IYHY.com allows you to surf any website from your cell phone, PDA, Blackberry, Treo, Sidekick, or other mobile device even if the page is not formatted for mobile use. Just enter the URL below and we will convert the site to text only.”

Convert any regular website into a text version.

Dial2Do: Hands-free Text Alternative

9 Feb

Last year Leading Hands recommended Jott, a service that will translate your voice message into text and then email it to an individual on your contact list. With more and more text messaging accidents on the rise, the need for more “hands-free” alternatives is imperative.

The other day I discovered “Dial 2 Do”, a service that will translate your voice into to text message. However the free translation service gives you the option to not only email it, but you can update your Twitter account or even send a text message. You can even set it up to listen to your emails.

Review: With any voice to text translation service from time to time it has issues understanding certain words and there is mis-interpretation. However as you continue to use the service, you can build your own unique vocabulary the system will understand. If you must text while driving, then this service is for you.

Dodgeball Phone Tracker

26 Oct

In my opinion, Dodgeball is a website that is social networking on steroids. The purpose of this service is to easily connect with your friends, make new friends and just hang out. The site connects virtual world to real world.

Imagine getting a text message immediately to your mobile phone when a friend is within 5 miles of your current location. The text message will tell you the name of your friend, the establishment they are at and pinpoint their location.

This mobile connection site also takes social networking to the next level by indicating if you are close to a friend of friend. The same statistics are displayed on your phone which are name and location. The site also has a third classification as “Crushes”. These are people you really don’t know at all, but you’ve tagged their online profile as a “Crush” and you’re interested in meeting them. If the “Crush” is nearby you’ll get a text of their location.

I think this is a good tool if used responsibly because there are features like being able to text all your friends at once. However, like anything else, I can see this technology being used incorrectly in the wrong hands. Dodgeball is free and standard text messaging fees do apply. It is currently available in 22 cities.

Would you use this service? Do you think this service is a threat to teen safety?

JaJah

3 Oct

Remember those really annoying John Stamos, Uncle Jessie from Full House, commercials that told you to call 1-7-7-7-6 before you make a call to save on long distance? Guess what… the concept it back with JaJah.

This time you can make call with JaJah on your mobile or landline phone to save money and keep in touch with friends and family. If you make a bunch of international phone calls, you can save some dough. The website says, “It connects you using your existing phone. No contract, no software, no headset. Easy to use, so start saving right now.” I haven’t tried it, but a friend of mine uses it and loves it.

1-800-GOOG-411

4 Sep

I was surfing Google and I saw they introduced a mobile information service called 1-800-GOOG-411. Basically, you call the number, tell the automated agent what you want and it will give you a listing of services. It’s like moviefone for everything. The best part is that it’s free.

What do you do when you call?

  • Say Your Location
  • Say What You’re Looking For “I.E. Tacos”
  • Pick Number
  • Get Connected with Service

If you want just information, you can say “text” and the service will send the text to your phone. In this mode it will even send you a map of your location.

Try it, you’ll like it.
