Learn to Play Music Faster with Modern Educational Technology

Studies have consistently shown that technology helps improve learning. From mobile apps and online courses to software and even games, modern teaching and learning tools are clearly a great way to enhance the overall learning experience. They’re not only fun and convenient, but they also allow students to learn at their own pace.

Get the physical tools ready

When it comes to learning how to play a musical instrument, however, you can’t rely solely on your apps and other e-learning tools. You’ll also need the physical gear before you can get started. This includes the instrument you want to play and all the other related accessories required to make it work.

Let’s say you want to learn how to play the electric guitar. Aside from getting the instrument itself, you’ll also need things like strings, instrument cables, picks and a good guitar chair to sit on. If you pick the drums, on the other hand, then you’ll need a kit, several pairs of drumsticks and good soundproofing materials. Keep in mind that the best way to learn is to integrate theory and practice, and these physical tools will allow you to do just that.

Find a medium that works for you

According to Andrea Leyden of GoConqr, learning through apps is the future of education—which is probably true considering the rate at which educational apps are improving. However, the choice of what you should use to learn your chosen instrument should still ultimately depend on the type of learner you are and what medium you’re most comfortable with. If you need formal instruction, for example, then a structured online course would be your best bet. If you prefer a more fun set-up, on the other hand, then more game-type tools would suit you better.

Of course, having a clear goal in mind should also help you make this decision much more easily. For example, if you want to learn chords first, then you should get a tool that helps you do that. Want to learn songs more easily? Then get an app or software that allows you to make music play slower or faster.

Consistency is key

At the end of the day, however, whatever modern learning tools you choose to use, if they help keep you motivated to continue playing, then you’ve made the right decision. After all, skills like playing music rely heavily on consistent practice. Long story short, the more you play, the faster you get better at doing so.

Rock Induction on Fuse.tv

21 Mar

Ever since I could remember, VH1 has broadcasted the Rock Hall Induction ceremony, but now they sold their rights to the Fuse network. The former Behind the Music Specialists are now playing lifestyle programming like “Brett Michael’s Rock of Love” and are moving away from their focus on music. So if you are a music fan, then see if the TV network is in your area or surf their website.

The Fuse website is packed with polls, exclusive interviews with rock legends and tour information. Video, photos, games and blogs on pop, metal, rock and hip hop is also what you can find.

Digital Album Download Cards

10 Mar

The other day I was in Best Buy and for the first time, I noticed digital album download cards. The card had a picture of the album cover on the front and then the listings of the songs on the back. You would take the album card to Music Pass and download your music.

I thought this is an interesting hybrid between getting a CD and downloading tracks from iTunes. At least here you actually get a card that you can hold on and cherish for years to come.  The card does leave you with something tangible; it’s a picture of your favorite album (even if it’s essential Mullet Rock tracks).

Do you think this has merit to replace the physical realm of CDs? Would you buy a digital download card? as a gift? for yourself?

The Filter – Search Music & Movies You Like

9 Mar

For years if you went into a store and were looking at something, the sales person would come and say, “If you like this item, then you might also like this item.” Amazon took that concept of suggesting items you might like and rolled it into their online store ten years ago. This concept of suggestive retail is now living strong and has catapulted into other arenas. Now most of your popular social networks like Facebook will suggest other friends you should add to your list. Now the Filter, a new website that is like a search engine, leads you to music and movies you’ll enjoy.

The Filter is a website that will suggest music and movies based on your tastes. Type in an artist, you’ll download an artist bio, videos and essential songs plus a list of others that are similar. Then you can slide the familiarity and time scale to narrow down the related artists. You can likewise do the same when you do a movie search too!

Try the Filter; it recommends music and movies based on your tastes.

I’m All About This Blog Series!

28 Dec

Want to discover everything about music, movies and games? The “all” family of blogs features in-depth stats and facts about each of these topics written by their staff of experts/fanatics.

What I like about this series of blogs is that from one search you can discover and connect facts. For example, if you are a fan of the band U2 you may discover that they were influenced by David Bowie, the Hothouse Flowers followed their sound, Duran Duran sounds like them, and that many artists covered their music. You can literally get lost on these sites for hours by clicking around from one fact to another.

Error FM

16 Oct

Are you looking for an alternative to the daily grind of regular radio? Has your XM station worn out it’s welcome? Is your iPod on overload and you’re sick of the same songs being played over and over? Then look no further than Error FM to cure your need for fresh music.

ErrorFM is an online radio station that is supported by an array of volunteer jocks. The college radio station had a similar format, basically every two hours a new type of music was being played. Check out there schedule and see if there is a show you like. Better yet, you may want to become an internet jockey.

Note: The content of some of these shows may not be suitable for children.

Metromix

26 Aug

A new way to find events in your city is at Metromix, a new conglomerate event website. Currently the website features unique content for: Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Cleveland, Connecticut, Denver, Des Moines, Detroit, Hampton Roads, Honolulu, Jersey Shore,Lehigh Valley, Los Angeles, Louisville , Nashville, New York, Orlando, Rochester, South Florida, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Washington D.C. and the Twin Cities.

Metromix was at Cleveland Ingenuity Festival a few weeks ago touting their new website. The site features interviews with local celebrities, restaurant reviews and scenes from nightlife. I personally like their calendar featuring today’s events. The site is more than just information though, it seems to be pushing the envelope into social networking by encouraging visitors to participate in music and movie reviews.

If you are looking for places to go and people to see, then check out:
