Where did you learn to walk and text?

12 May

The other day, I witnessed a person texting walk right into a wall. Growing up as a kid, when were walking and tripped over a crack in the sidewalk, your friend would say, “Where did you learn to walk?” Today I think the phrase could be revamped to say, “Where did you learn to walk and text?”

I saw the app that lets you see the path in front of you as you text.
Andriod – Walk and Text
iPhone – Type and Walk

Should texting be limited to being stationary at all times?

1 Jan

Families.com blogger Stephanie Romero recently did an in depth report on “Tools for Texting Teens and Their Parents” with celebrity, author, and psychiatrist Dr. Charles Sophy. He articulates that, “Parenting begins with you. Not your child. You.”

When it comes to teens and texting, be aware of your parental responsibilities:
1. Keep tabs on their behavior.
2. Educate yourself about the risks.
3. Set limits with your teens.
4. Keep an open dialogue with your teen.

What states is it illegal to text and drive? 31 out of 50 states currently have a ban on texting while driving. If you get caught, the consequences are steep.

More and more states have added and enforce a ban on texting while driving and consider it as bad as driving while intoxicated. The Jonas Brothers are the most recent celebrities to endorse no texting while driving. No Texting While Driving Pledge

17 Dec

Texting While Driving

Nationwide found that nearly 40% of teenagers admitted they send and receive text messages while driving. The same group said they have been hit or almost been hit by a driver talking on the phone. A group called Mom Sends The Message has launched a viral campaign to pledge to not text while behind the wheel.

Their pledge says, “Driving while distracted can be more dangerous than driving drunk. As moms, we want safer roads. We know the time has come for us all to recognize the risks of distracted driving, to be more responsible and to mind the wheel.”

Here is their pledge:
We pledge to model safe behavior when we drive.
We pledge to set firm house rules on texting and phoning while driving.
We pledge to help spread the word on the dangers of distracted driving.

What can you do?
Become a friend of theirs on Facebook

Print off the Car Window Sign and get involved.

Tamra Moroski posted this video up on her Twitter account the other day about texting and driving. She said, ” I know that it’s very graphic, but it would definitely scare teens away from texting in the car. I think it does a great job of getting the point across. ”

Must Text & Drive? Try This.

20 Jul

We here at Leading Hands do not condone texting while driving, however if you must text, try this combination. First purchase a Bluetooth headset and second get Dial2do.

A low end model Bluetooth headset can cost you as little as $40 and high end model can cost as much as $150. Dial2Do is a free service that will translate your voice to text. The program does a rather accurate job translating your voice; it also does a great job reading back your email too.

Before you get pulled over because you’ve got your head down texting, try the alternative and keep your head up and your voice forward by using this combination. This suggestion will keep you hands-free for your steering wheel and looking straight. I think the question we need to answer is, “What constitutes failure to control your vehicle?” Will this headset plus voice translation service still cause an accident while driving? Is anything other than driving your car a distraction?

Death by Text, Look Up Or Die?

26 Apr

The other day I almost witnessed a death by text. I waiting at a light at a crosswalk and the guy next to me was busy looking down sending a text message. The pedestrian didn’t bother to look up and just starting crossing the street. I noticed a SUV was traveling right toward the guy and the driver had a phone perched on his steering wheel and was looking down at it. I yelled out, but the pedestrian didn’t flinch and at the last second, the driver looked up and slammed on their brakes. Even though the pedestrian wasn’t looking, if the driver struck the pedestrian, they would be at fault.

Last week Cleveland City Council passed a law that makes text messaging illegal while driving a vehicle; I found it interesting since there is a current law that prohibits doing anything distracting while driving. If you look around in today’s world, everyone is looking down texting, answering a call or playing a game on their phone. I realize that everyone needs to stay connected, but aren’t there actions like crossing a street, driving a car or operating a wood chipper when you should yield from using your phone? Unless it’s an emergency, shouldn’t you make time to look up from your phone at important moments. If you don’t look up, it may cost you your life one day.

Do you think texting while driving should be illegal? Are there times when it’s OK?

Dial2Do: Hands-free Text Alternative

9 Feb

Last year Leading Hands recommended Jott, a service that will translate your voice message into text and then email it to an individual on your contact list. With more and more text messaging accidents on the rise, the need for more “hands-free” alternatives is imperative.

The other day I discovered “Dial 2 Do”, a service that will translate your voice into to text message. However the free translation service gives you the option to not only email it, but you can update your Twitter account or even send a text message. You can even set it up to listen to your emails.

Review: With any voice to text translation service from time to time it has issues understanding certain words and there is mis-interpretation. However as you continue to use the service, you can build your own unique vocabulary the system will understand. If you must text while driving, then this service is for you.

Ban Texting While Driving?

18 Sep

The state of New Jersey introduced legislation last year that bans “texting” while driving a car. The recent L.A. train crash reportedly was caused because the driver was “texting”. “Texting” or SMS (Short Message System) is on the rise because smart phones like the BlackBerry and the iPhone make typing easy. However to craft a message, you must have one hand free and you must concentrate on sending the message.

Technology lets us communicate faster and easier than ever before, but is it leading us to certain death? Services like Jott translate your voice to text, so your hands are not on the wheel. However is driving while “texting” more a physical the issue or is the danger more of a concentration issue?

Should all states introduce legislation to ban “texting” while driving?
